Divine Mercy Novena Day 8

As followers of this blog know, I am a steadfast believer in Purgatory and I have a special place in my prayers for the souls of purgatory. They are up there with a  few major private intentions, the unborn, and the souls of those who either do not know God or want to be separated from Him for whatever reason. I even carry a holy card with the Holy Souls on it in my wallet.

I know I am no great theologian, but it is my understanding that the souls of Purgatory know best what it is to yearn for God. They have, in some way, experienced God after their death...but are not yet able to be in His presence for all eternity. Feel free to read a more in-depth reflection on my earlier post about the souls of purgatory. The souls in Purgatory may have been too imperfect to be admitted into heaven right away....but they know God and know what it is to be separated from Him...and they know why they are separated from Him. They long for him with an intense longing that cannot be described or even experienced by those still on  Earth. Whenever you read about saints that have come in contact with God, you read about these people experiencing ecstasies and indescribable joy.

I myself have had a few mini-encounters with God...and can honestly say that I long for the next mini-encounter...so I can only imagine how much I would long for God if I ever experienced what the souls of Purgatory experience. They are that much closer to God than we are...but being that close INTENSIFIES the longing and, as a result, INTENSIFIES their suffering. Since the Holy Souls are not really able to pray for themselves...today we are called to pray for them. Though this isn't part of the Divine Mercy Novena, I would also recommend offering up any daily struggles and bits of suffering for these souls as well.

Day 8
"Today bring to Me the Souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice."
Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet, who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of Purgatory, that there, too, the power of Your mercy may be celebrated.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg You, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded: Manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way but only through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Amen.

Pax Vobiscum
